Lips Drag Queen Show

My friend Carla celebrated her birthday at Lips Drag Queen Show on Buford Highway in Atlanta, and we had a blast!

Carla and I dance together in Dance Brasil Entertainment; here we are, posing with Andrea and Adriane and a guest at the Latin Ball:

So since I have such a great time with her in costume and feathers, it was a no-brainer that I would have a ball with her at a drag show.

Shall we just start with the most ridiculous picture?

Pictured above is a bride we don’t know who walked around the whole venue carrying her giant blow-up penis toy. As you might imagine, chaos ensued.

She almost got herself swung on by more than one drag queen. Apparently, “turnt up” has a limit, girl!

But our birthday girl had a good time and that’s all that matters.

Especially after a few of these drinks. I enjoyed the “Kick the Bitch to the Curb” drink; I think it was a mix of tequila, vodka, and rum. O_o

So, when you walk into Lips, there is a large bar on your right hand side, and the rest of the room is a giant dining area with four or five really long tables. The tables end at the base of a glittery stage.

The concept of no individual tables makes for a fun, communal experience, because you all pile in with other patrons and have a good time together.

The decor was fun and colorful, which you know I like.

All of the “waitresses” are in costume, and many are the actual performers, as well.

After ordering dinner and plenty of cocktails, the show began with a flourish!

The queens perform individually to popular songs, ranging from Katy Perry to Gladys Knight.

About midway through the songs, the performers sashay off-stage and dance alongside the seated crowd, still singing and performing, to collect dollars and tips.

Lips is a popular choice at which to celebrate special occasions, so there were several brides-to-be, birthdays, and even anniversaries. They were all invited onstage.

Carla sat regally on her throne:

Though the hostess heckled her a bit, as she heckled everyone, nothing could take the bounce out of Carla’s curls, OK??

As usual, I don’t have many pictures of myself, but I kinda love how these three turned out. Psychedelic, out of focus, a little trippy. I like it!

And of course that damn blow-up penis made it’s way around again. When “Adele” was onstage, she snatched it from the bride and threw it backstage. Wish I got video of that.

Why is that thing missing teeth, tho?

We couldn’t resist posing with this beautiful gold statue…

…before gathering onstage for a final picture.

If you’re going to Lips, you will likely enjoy yourself. There is definitely a lot of fun to be had! I have a couple of tips that may help keep your night smooth, though:

  1. There seemed to be a couple of a la carte charges, so keep an eye on that during your night. There’s a per person cover charge that is added to your bill at the end (not a big deal, I just usually expect to pay upon entering), and also when you’re onstage like Carla was, if you pose for a picture before getting offstage, you are buying a $10 picture that is put in a paper frame and added to your bill as well. These charges were made a little more tricky by the fact that our bill wasn’t split up for us. One bill for seven people: food, drink, tax, cover, tip, photo, and whatever else.
  2. Also, take care when ordering food. I ordered chicken fingers, and the server asked if I wanted fries along with it. I said sure. That changed my order from an appetizer to a dinner, and more than doubled the price. Guess I should’ve asked what *exactly* the server meant. I’d eaten before coming, so I really only wanted to snack. So I would encourage you to be clear.
  3. We also had a staggeringly long ordeal paying for the meal. I mean, an ordeal. We were the last to leave, and it took all of us, two servers, a pen and paper, and a calculator to figure it out properly, and it still was confusing. I have absolutely no idea what made it so confusing, but it was just … tangled. So I *definitely* recommend bringing cash to this venue, if you’re going with others. Even still, factor in a good twenty minutes of calculating and tabulating and whatnot.

Those friendly suggestions aside, rock on with yo’ bad self! You best believe she will:
